About
Hello, my name is Lesley,

I discovered my love of creating ceramics through deliberate curiosity – a self-imposed challenge to try fifty new things in a year. Ceramics had been quietly niggling at the periphery of my mind for years and made it straight to the top of the list. I signed up for classes with Roz Wallis at Chiswick Art School and many years later here we are – from the first moment of handling the clay I haven’t stopped and the joy it brings me hasn’t diminished.

I now work as a ceramic artist based in Chiswick, West London, creating handmade pottery from my garden studio. I work with a range of techniques, including wheel throwing, hand building, carving and jewellery making; shaping each piece according to what it needs and overseeing every stage of the process, from fresh clay through to the final glazed ceramic.
Working in seasons
My work is made in focused periods, with each one forming its own collection.
The seasons influence the work just as much as the calendar, shaping the colours, forms and overall feeling of each piece.

Responding to the rhythm of the year might mean making soup bowls and tableware in autumn, or flower vases and lighter pieces in spring, creating a natural balance in the work.

Working this way allows me to fully immerse myself in one collection at a time, which is when I do my best work.

Approach
My pottery is rooted in a simple belief: the objects we live with every day should be both useful and beautiful.
I’m sure William Morris liked it best when it could be an “and” and not an “or”. This idea shapes every piece I make, thinking about how it will look as much as how it will be used.
Alongside my pottery collections, I also create ceramic jewellery, applying the same attention to form and craftsmanship to smaller, wearable pieces.

The best way to experience my work is in person at one of my At Home studio events in Chiswick, where visitors can see the latest handmade ceramics and seasonal collections. I think ceramics are made to be held and l love opening up my home and studio so you can see and feel them for yourselves in a relaxed environment.
I hold about 4 a year and you can receive an invitation through signing up for my Studio Notes newsletter.

If you can’t make it in person, the online gallery and Studio Notes newsletter are the next best way to discover new work, collection releases and updates from the studio.
And if you want to chat anything ceramics I am happy to do that all the time (!) just drop me a line.
Thank you for visiting my website, I hope you enjoy exploring my work.
